The first glaciology camp took place between 20 and 25 September 2011, with 20 senior high school students (10 Italian speakers and 10 German speakers) of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen taking part. The participants were chosen through direct contact between the persons responsible for the project and interested school directors and teachers.
The camp was partly held in the Hotel Franzenshöhe, which is located on the main road to the Stelvio Pass. The program consisted of field trips to the Ortler region accompanied by mountain guides and researchers. During these trips, subjects such as geology and glaciology, mountain flora and fauna, and human activities in mountain regions were discussed. In addition, meetings with researchers from the Ortler project took place. They explained in detail the goals, methods and techniques of their scientific research work.
