Summer School in Glaciology 2013

  • Education

The third edition of the Summer School in Glaciology for high school students of the Province of Bolzano has taken place between the 17th and 21st of September. This event has been organized in collaboration with the Departments of Education (Italian and German languages) of the Province of Bolzano, EURAC, the National Natural Park of Stelvio and the Hydrographic Office of the Province of Bolzano.

The Summer School in Glaciology has been organized at the Franzenshohe Hotel, near the Stelvio Pass. This is an ideal location for developing a very rich program including front and online lectures, excursions in the territory and practical-didactic activities. The first edition of this Summer School was developed in 2011 during the drilling campaign performed by the Ortles Project researchers on the summit of the Alto dell’Ortles glacier. The scientific results have recently been presented during a scientific workshop at the EURAC in Bolzano.

20 students and 7 accompanying teachers have been involved in the 2013 Summer School. The students were half Italian and half German speakers and were selected among 12 high schools involved in this project in the Province of Bolzano. The set of topics developed was very broad and included not only glaciology but also geological, geomorphological, natural (thanks to the lectures of the managers of the Stelvio Natural Park), paleoclimatic (with the videoconference from USA of Paolo Gabrielli, the scientific responsible of the Ortles Project) and remote sensing aspects. Equally broad was the kind of didactic activities performed including excursions on glaciers, outdoor naturalistic observations, lectures, simulations, teamwork and the development of physical models.
