The perforation operations on the summit glacier of the Ortler mountain continue. After having entirely perforated the glacier for the first time, the researchers are now working on a second ice core, which will be extracted a few metres from the first one.
The perforation system has already reached the lower part of the upper firn layer (compacted snow that is turning into ice) and has started to perforate the first proper ice layers, which are located several metres below the surface.
Today, while waiting for further news from the glacier, we invite you to take a virtual tour of the places where the project is currently taking place. Download the file “Main sites of the Ortler Project” and open it with Google Earth. You will be able to see the information and pictures by clicking on the place markers.
